November 1 — 30, 2005 / Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens, “Panic Attack”
The ninth video in the Performing Video series.

still from 'Panic Attack' by Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens

“Panic Attack” depicts a fictitious account of a man’s lifelong struggle with anxiety. From his early shyness in school to nausea brought on by close encounters with others, the narrator recounts his gradual dependence on downers—valium and the like—to subdue his chronic attacks. “Panic Attack” borrows conventions from television—the look of televised stand-up comedy and the use of sitcom laugh tracks, for example—allowing Ibghy & Lemmens to convey familiarity and to tell the viewer the sorts of stories that television generally shuns as far too everyday and much too personal.

video still from Jeremy Newman's "Lamentation"

Lamentation explores the relationship between Jewish & Christian faiths. Newman selected the images to enhance each faith’s dialogue with the other, but to also highlight the tension between the faiths doctrinally and historically.

“The video short layers original images in a manner that emphasizes their ephemeral nature. It interweaves black-and-white with color in an evocation of memory.” — Jeremy Newman

Jeremy Newman earned an MFA in Media Arts from The Ohio State University in 1997. In 2002, he was a Visiting Professor of Art at Oberlin College. His videos have been screened and broadcast internationally.
